Sunrise over Chesapeake Bay–Wednesday morning.
Birds squabble round the bird feeder–many varieties, searching for food while the snow still lies on the ground.
Cardinals, Blue Jays, Grackles, a Red Headed Woodpecker, Sparrows, Finches.
In the bay, close to the house, a pair of Herons and four majestic Tundra Swans in stately procession.
A single gull knocks on the door.
“Any spare scraps ‘dbe welcome,” then circles away when there is no response.
Canada geese called by yesterday–a rare visitation we are told.
A host of black birds swirl in from the side and threaten to sweep the smaller fry off the picture.
Our indignant host gets up and the invaders retreat, to bide their time in the trees a little to the side.
“This is the eighteenth snowfall we’ve had this winter.”
“Is that standard?”
“Normally we have two or three!”
No wonder the bird feeder is popular!
soul-soothing serenity…..
It must be a beautiful place and to see so much wildlife must be wonderful. Your time in the US seems to be going so quickly, love hearing about all the things you are doing, lovely descriptions, thanks:-)
Or sunrise on the Somerset Levels???
Hope things have improved for you levelers.
very pretty picture.
Enjoyed this entry very much. My husband and I have visited the Chesapeake area often and can’t get enough of the beautiful flors and fauna.
Aside from the water birds, we get the same lot in our garden, and every once and a while I need to shoo the Grackles off!
In another month, the ‘dawn chorus’ will start. One of my very favorite things about the spring. I woke up at 4am one day last spring, and I decided to go sit on the screened-in porch and just listen. It was beautiful.
We have a lot of trees and ‘hiding’ places in our yard, and the birds love it.
Hope it’s warmer down there than it is up in NH…Was 10 below (23 C) this morning –our coldest morning so far! I thought we were supposed to be going the OTHER way at this time of year!! (Our feeder’s been busy, too!)
Stay warm & drive carefully!!
Cheers & hugs!
I’ve lived on the east coast since 1974, prime Poldark watching era!! But I could hardly identify the birds you’ve picked out so quickly! Are you a birder, or do you have an expert chez nous? Gorgeous photo…

We have had so much snow this winter, and we are so ready for spring! Sorry you were here in the thick of the cold and snow, Robin and Meredith!
Beautiful picture.
How did you like the Bay Bridge? You must come back for MD steamed crabs in the summer!
The bridge was impressive and long!
We found a crab soup the other side.
What a gorgeous view, during the spring and summer the Chesapeake is filled with striped bass, which are so much fun to fly fish for.
Hope you enjoyed your trip to the Mid-Atlantic. Generally we are not so cold and snowy this time of year.
Glad you are enjoying our wonderful birds! thought you might like this really great site. http://triblive.com/news/projects/pittsburgheagle/. sorry for the adverts. it can get a bit addictive, but it is truly wonderous that these birds have made such a stunning comeback!
