Jack posed this question yesterday in a comment and it is not an unreasonable one. It made me think about the new language of the internet, which sometimes seems like webspeak gobbledigook!
I put the above question into Google and found this on one site:
Any user-posted root node is subject to moderation.
Moderation refers to two possible changes in a node’s status:
- Approval of a node into the selected section of the site;
- Front-Paging a node, i.e. allowing it to be listed on the main page.
- Note that a node cannot be “front-paged but unapproved”.
Silly me I should have knowd!
I think I understand what is meant but wouldn’t plain english explain it better?!
Moderation has other meanings and there are jollier definitions:
“Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.”
“Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice”
“Moderation is the inseparable companion of wisdom, but with it genius has not even a nodding acquaintance”–[Oh dear!]
Charles Caleb Colton: (English sportsman and writer, 1780-1832)
“Throw moderation to the winds, and the greatest pleasures bring the greatest pains”
This definition is from wikipedia:
Moderation is a principle of life. In ancient Greece, the temple of Apollo at Delphi bore the inscription Meden Agan (μηδεν ἀγαν) – ‘Nothing in excess’. Doing something “in moderation” means not doing it excessively. For instance, someone who moderates their food consumption, tries to eat all food groups, but limits their intake of those that may cause deleterious effects to harmless levels.
This I can understand!
nice onr rob still not too clear on moderation although i do know it is something i tried for half my life and failed miserably. there’s node business like show business …..that i do knode.but then i should have knowed that!
🙂 As someone who frequents several “moderated” sites, in this case it means that, if for any reason there is something offensive or inappropriate in the post, then the moderator has the option to delete the comment/post. Unfortunately there are some sites where that has to be done much too often. 😦
Robin – also wanted to let you know that Dad no longer needs dialysis. If all goes well, he’ll be coming home on the 19th. Can’t wait to try some of your recipes out for him, as he has been complaining for the last two weeks that the food at the rehab center is AWFUL!
Great news–I’m so pleased for you and for him, of course.
Hi Robin, are you sure Google didn’t come up with ‘any user-posted rood note is subject to moderation’? Trouble with this internet cyber space stuff is that some rude people can be prone to forget their manners when posting. Ah well, it keeps the moderators busy, happily moderating I guess.
Can’t wait to get my copy of your fabulous book full of your delicious recipes. Judas! who’d ever have thought it, Captain Ross let loose in the kitchen, what ever would Prudie have made of it all? But I guess your owe your good, healthy eating habits partially to the beautiful Demelza who spent her days fishing off Nampara Cove for your supper all those years ago! 🙂
