I would go out, not knowing anyone was around or visible and a cat would call to me. She was a Bucknell cat who also came to eat here and it was clear she had decided to be my cat. I was afraid she was pregnant but was told she was only fat. While I was debating taking her to be spayed, someone told me she had five kittens at Bucknell.
Then someone told me there was apparently too much activity around her and she was moving kittens. They said she was heading my way. I saw and heard nothing. I had some concern because my back porch is enclosed but unheated and it was very cold and a lot is inaccessible because I’ve got stuff out there. She could also get into the basement but it would be complicated. I worried but there was nothing I could do. I assumed that with an inexperienced mother the kittens, if they were there, had probably frozen.
Then one day when I opened the door six heads popped up. Caroline had clearly scoped out the territory before she had the kittens. She had carried each kitten two blocks across two busy streets. I went off to get some kitten chow. Arrangements had been made for someone to foster the kittens, but first they would have to be caught. I worked on being able to touch them but during the process two were killed by a raccoon.
I made some adjustments, putting no food outside and trying to get them shut in at night. Now I can pet the remaining four and they are sleeping in the house when they want to. I’ve decided to keep them even though they are likely to outlive me. When it’s suitable Charlotte, Heather, Megan, and Sean will be coming for neutering and shots.
