We have a visitor. As before with Beau and Midnight–out of the blue. Just turned up mewing sadly, not knowing that as an old friend once said it had fallen into the butter dish by stopping by.
He/she-we don’t know the gender yet–advances a little further down the path each visit, encouraged, by the food laid out, to be courageous.
Last night I noticed it managed to lower its eyes while lapping up the milk.
No sign of it this morning when Meredith called out. She worries the house cats have shooed it away during the night.
They have treated it as a curiosity so far and offered little hostility. Could mean it’s female –which would be good in a household of three big males but the name that came into Meredith’s mind –Archimedes– would not suit the little mite!
It rained in the night–perhaps it’s sleeping off a disturbed night.
Watch this space for updates on this happy event…
Meanwhile here’s a link to Meredith’s beautiful footage in the courtyard…
Ben seems cool about the watching figure!
STOP PRESS: Sighting at noon–all’s well!
Hope it will stay! 😉
How about Shadow?
I once read that, in times gone by, “hobos” left each other secret markers if a home was likely to offer a meal or a bed for the night. I wonder if cats do that, too.
I believe and I believe that the symbol for a kind-hearted woman was a cat.
Robin,
So glad that you and Meredith saw the little one. May you have a new member of the family soon. It’s a wonderful and kind thing that you have done in adopting them.
Best,
MARLA
I do hope your wee visitor returns to join the Ellis Clan. Look forward to updates. Rachel

I now have 5 cats that desperately wanted a home. Supposedly feral, no way, these are dumped out in the country. How do scum people think they will survive? They timidly come begging for food, attention, and a home. Is that too much to ask for? I have them neutered. Who wants more cats? But, eventually, they join into pack life and our home. Good luck with your newest addition!
Thank you for this post! Adorable–I hope your kitten moves in and becomes family! “I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” (Jean Cocteau).
Hope she stay. And stays safe.
So sweet! I hope you end up with a new addition! Keep us posted!
Black cats are wonderful. I hope s/he sticks around and joins the family.
How lovely.. 🙂
Cats are very discriminating. They are always drawn to only the best people, so it does not surprise me that they are would attach themselves to you and Meredith.
AWWWWW how lovely!
TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. MY VISITORS SOPHIE AND ROSIE NO LONGER GUESTS BUT PERMANENT ROOMMATES
Hopefully this little might will figure out it has a good home now. It makes me sad the way people do not take care of their pets which shortens their lifespan. 2018 was a hard year for us because we had to put 3 pets to sleep. Their organs were shutting down from old age, it was each one’s time but not all at once ( they each went and several months apart from each other) They had lived long lives. 2 cats ages 12 (I rescued from a cemetery before she was even old enough to be weened and about to die) 19 year old (she came from a no-kill shelter) and our white Pekingese (pet store) who lived to be 16. I swore no more pets. So now we have two cats. Yep, I was a mess and could not handle not having little fur-babies. The first cat we got from the no-kill shelter where she had lived for nearly two years. She is a true British Manx (no-tail). People here in America didn’t warm up to her lack of tail. Then we found out while were at the shelter that she doesn’t let anyone hold her. We were asked if we could handle owning a cat that would just co-exist in our home without being able to hold her that she would never be a lap cat. My husband and I looked at each other and we were certain she was for us. Chloe seems to be suffering severe PTSD. We don’t know what happened to her before we came along but we are convinced it had to be bad. She still doesn’t one to be held but she does give us “Drive by” hugs as she rubs against our legs and has started to allow us to pet her, just not touching her head. Anyhow, while still being in deep grief, I decided to get Chloe” and us a second cat but to get a kitten and see how Chloe’ would handle it. So we got a pet store kitten of 12 weeks age. It has gone very well. The first time I saw Chloe’ actually play with a cat toy brought me to tears. She never played at all until that moment and only after getting her a little buddy. She watched Trevor play and figured out that she could play too. “Trevor,” the kitten is now 11 months old and bigger then Chloe’, he is a main coon so we expected that. And true to his breed he is exceptionally affectionate to all of us and Chloe’.The two of them wrestle and play together all the time now. It is such a beautiful thing to watch. It took Chloe’ a long time to become comfortable with us and to trust us. She still refuses to be picked up but that is okay. We know this about her and you never know maybe one day she will find her way onto one of our laps. We have plenty of time to wait and not force the issue. Hopefully, with your patience you will a new buddy.
Aw…. That’s how most of our six cats arrived, too. Most recently, a long-haired orange boy, our Beau, arrived one day crying pitifully for food and water, which I provided. I left him out that night, but there he was, waiting for breakfast the next morning. Apparently I serve the best food, because he stayed. He was less than a year old and missing his sister, a short-haired orange girl who found her way to a different neighbor and then to the Humane Society. Their owners left them outside to fend for themselves for a four day weekend. Fortunately for us, the owners were not willing to pay to release the girl from kitty jail. Beau and his sister are a bonded pair, so we adopted her on the day her sentence ended. Two years later and the now adult Beau and Tessa Joy greet each other every morning with sniffs and happy chats. “It’s you! And you! Oh, you smell good! Yeah, yeah, where’s the food?” It’s a lovely way to start our days.
So cute, but heart-wrenching at the same time. I hope this story has a happy ending for all concerned.
It’s always best when they choose you! My boy Gypsy was named after the musical Gypsy. Then I found out he was a boy. Oh well — it worked for him!
My sister & her family recently had a young cat show up on their back deck in North Carolina – after resisting his charms for a few weeks, concerned about her older kitties, she finally allowed him in. He’s been visiting here in Central NY for a few weeks but headed back home with her yesterday. She sent me pictures as he slept on her lap all the way back to NC. She is worried about his integration into the household with the other kitties but there’s no doubt in my mind Bruce Wayne is going nowhere else. While he is named for the black markings which look like a pulled-up mask on his head, when he turns around there is very clearly an angel from his head to his back. As annoyed as she pretends to be, she believes it’s quite clear that my late Dad sent him along. He fits in her family like he’s always been there. For those of us who are ‘chosen’ by our kitties, they know where they belong. I would not be surprised if your little visitor does too.
Morning Robin and Meredith delighted that your new foster cat has turned up again You both obviously have enormous hearts here we are biting our finger nails to await the Dreaded outcome if Brexit It makes my fingers hurt to type that word The only consolation is oldark is on the tele every Sunsay But I see a Simon Williams has been promoted to Attirney General over Reverend Halse Shame Take Care good luck with little cat
Simon was always a cut above!
Actually looks quite at home in the video – so, you have a new cat!
Cross fingers, Mary!
I hope he decides to stay, he will have a wonderful home with you both.
Good luck. My sister has a new kitty as of this spring. She was feeding her on her patio since late last summer and made her a little house with blankets, etc and was becoming friendly with her and my sister 2 cats. Then she noticed that she was getting fat …. Yes, she was gone a few days and came back to eat and was thinner . Mom brought her kittens to my sisters and she had 4 beautiful babies and a neighbor saw them and took then to the vets and kept two and the other two were adopted. My sister, Susan, took mom to the vets and had her fixed and took her in the house and she hasn’t been outside since. She had her own room at first but now she gets along with the 2 males pretty well. Each day is a little better. Her name is Rapunzel and she is tiny and so sweet . Of course, she is the queen of the house now and bosses the boys. Another life saved and so I think you will have another kitty soon. We love our kitties.
Since this little one arrived ¨out of the blue¨, why not call it Blue, whether a girl or a boy .
We have a Blackie add Blue–not a bad idea.
Been reflecting on names for ur little
mite If Meredith likesArchimedes what a mouthful what about Archie very royal but also very cute well just realised that’s probably a boys name ooh I’m sharp How about Demellza !!!
We love cats.
One never chooses a cat…they choose you. Persevere. If it’s a girl, what about Boudicca since she’s a feisty female? Good luck.
Any update on the lovely little one?
I will look forward to updates about your potential new friend, Robin. And thank God for new friends in an angry world!
Hi, Chris. I have been neglecting the blog–so apologies. Back to business today though and onwards.
Any updates on the little one? I hope he/she has joined your household and that all is well.
Updates overdue and coming!
Wishing you and Meredith a very Happy Christmas!
Thanks, Heidi.
I have a small black feral kitty, Serena, that I feed daily (also four of my own). My cats need to be indoor only due to coyotes that pass right by my house, so I had an outdoor “catio” built, also a shelter for Serena. But I’ve been a lifetime dog lover and have had huskies for 50+ years. I made the switch to cats after my last dog passed 3 years ago and so happy I did. I miss my dogs but I didn’t realize how much I love cats as well. Each has a distinct personality (as do dogs). Hope this little one stays with you and Meredith and your clan. Happy Christmas and New Year. By the way, I looked you up on Wiki and discovered I’m exactly, to the day, ten years younger than you, so Happy 78th on January 8th.
You’ll enjoy the next ten, Ellen!
