May Day!
Today, in the postbox, a letter from Prime Minister, Theresa May!
I sent her a copy of Mediterranean Cooking for Diabetics a few weeks ago.
She has Type 1 Diabetes and I’ve read that she is a keen cook–possessing over a hundred cookbooks!
(We have THAT in common!)
It could greatly benefit the campaign to fight the rise of Diabetes to have such a public figure as the new FEMALE Prime Minister of the UK, declaring so publicly, that she is Type 1 diabetic.
wow you should be rightly proud its great to get Diabetes in the media more awareness may mean more funding into research
Je suis d’accord, Deborah.
That’s wonderful!
This is so wonderful!!! My 10 year old grandson has Type 1 Diabetes, and I know what a devastating disease this is. Kudos for advancing diabetes awareness!!!!! I have several of your cookbooks.
It is so difficult for youngsters like your grandson. Sounds like he’s in good hands though, Irene.

That is so very nice. When does your book tour come to Chicago? I am a big fan of yours. We named our son Ross.
Next May, Susan. Hope Ross is still Ok with his name!
One of the many 5-star reviews on amazon says this is a book ‘to get your teeth into’, praise indeed for any cookery book. No idea whether he grilled it or used it raw in a salad, though. I plan to read it,with relish!
Would you consider a review too, Linda?
Happy to!
All the very best, LP
Yes, thank you for helping so many by not only raising awareness of Diabetes but also by providing means of understanding proper diet in such a delicious way!
And mega congratulations on your trophy letter — I bet it will find its way to the best wall for showcasing! Open a bottle of champagne!
I’ll raise a glass with our friends from Washington who are about to arrive.
What Nadine said–a delicious eating program is much more likely to be followed than a dull one.
I rest my case.
How cool is that?
Congratulations and good wishes on the fight to bring awareness to all!
Wow! that’s a keeper. Great Book.
Well done Robin…… for so many things but especially for sending the PM a copy of your book and for raising the public profile of diabetes and making a huge contribution to supporting those who live with it. Well done her for her gracious reply. Great job all round. Ros
Thank you, Ros.
woot woot, that is pretty cool.
How wonderful for you. Congratulations. I love your recipes, they are straight forward, and easy to execute. It has made cooking fun for me again.
Cheers!
Thanks Denise
Darn, I meant to write down your address off that first photo because I am sure I am going to want to send you a personal thank you note for your cookbook – which is due to arrive today. I will be happy to post a review on Amazon once I have a look and cook! All the best- Greg
Darn, I meant to copy down your address from that first photo as I am sure I am going to want to send you a thank you note for your cookbook – which is due to arrive today. I do not have diabetes but want to keep it that way and as far as I can see your style of cooking is how most of us should be eating! All the best – Greg
Robin,
Brilliant! Well done! And you got the letter in 2 days. Did a special messenger on horseback come racing up to St Martin? Kxxx
That would have been something!
No–just a little yellow van!
Let us Skype over the wknd..
I shared this on Facebook. Kudos to you Robin for helping to raise awareness of healthy eating and disease prevention. BTW, I enjoyed listening to your audiobook Making Poldark which I downloaded from Audible.com. I think of the performers from that series who are no longer with us and applaud you for helping to spread the message of healthy eating for good health.
Thank you, Cheryl–I’m glad you enjoyed it.
THAT’s pretty awesome, Robin! Great to have her in your corner, as you say!! Maybe she’ll ask you to do some PSAs or be an official spokesman of some sort? (Think you’ve already earned that badge, anyway!) So cool!
I can dream, Dianne!
and so can your fans and readers, even if we across the pond are unlikely to see them.
A smiling postbox today for you, Robin, 😃 but she is a lucky lady too!
I’m not yet a Prime Minister, but let me dream that one day I’ll receive a book from you!
I’d vote for you, Simonetta!
Thank you, Robin, much appreciated! 😂
HI, Robin, Congratulations on the letter from the PM and the excellent book. I would love to know if the PM is a Poldark fan, original and new.
good on you robin I am proud of you
AWESOME
Dear Robin, You are on the map, for sure– now! That’s very exciting news.
in 1993-94, I had the joy of being a gestational diabetic, tested and given an appropriate set of exchanges, within 10 weeks. I had age (39), weight (192lb on a 5′ frame), and a family history of diabetes. Aside from having to come to grips with my intense dislike of needle–4 finger sticks a day with a thicker lancet than is used now, and at 5 mos., injections 2x daily–was no dense carbs before noon. My usual breakfast had been a 24 oz mug of tea and toasted francese/ciabbata rolls with butter and jam. I wanted a 4 exchange protein breakfast as easy and with as little cleanup as possible as that. Eggs and bacon occasionally yes (mostly out), but every blasted day the cooking and cleanup? Nope. That year, you could get decent IQF prawns at Trader Joe’s, and 8 oz was 4 exchanges. Cocktail sauce was nearly a free food. One dish to clean, shrimp water for my cat. For most of 8 months, that, with tea, was my breakfast. I took about 6 months off prawns, because I really like them, that was long enough to abstain.
Day after delivery, no more GDM. About 10 years later, the diabetes came back as D-2. No insulin, thinner lancets.
PM Mays being elected and being open about her diabetes is a greater public example to a mainstream world than Ari Ne’eman, a man with Asperger’s, who was appointed as a member of the National Council on Disability in 2009, finally confirmed in 2010, and was “termed out” in 2012.
Ari Ne’eman is the Founding President of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, where he initiates and directs efforts to increase the representation of autistic individuals in public policy discussions. He finds the goals of Autism Speaks to be heinous and responsible for recent deaths of autistic children.
I will post reviews when I’ve taken my signed copy home from Books Inc in Palo Alto, and have read it, callou callay!
Marina
See you there.
Awwk! Forgot to congratulate you on sending the book, and getting such a swift reply.
Marina
Didn’t know she was diabetic. She will enjoy your book.
Good to know that our new PM has perfect manners! Chequers is about 5 miles from us here, so I look forward to some wonderful smells wafting down from the Chiltern Hills! Hoping you are both having a great weekend x
You too, Rachel.
Bravo to you – and Brava to the PM! I second all the comments about her influence raising diabetes consciousness. Hope she’ll also increase awareness of your wonderful cook books.
Nancy, NM
What a kind gesture to send the new PM a gift of your new book. She has a lot on her plate leading the country right now but with your recipes at least the plate will have suitable food for her on it! Thanks for sharing her reply with us all.
Robin! How lovely to see your smiling face and looking so proud of
your envelope! I know you were wondering whether your kind gesture would be acknowledged! No doubt, lunch at No.10 and a gong in the offing!
I expect no less. Indeed elevation to the “other house” would be in order…
Robin! Forgot to sign off with best wishes – this is the first time I have
ever done anything this technical and was sidetracked!
Madeleine
I’m impressed!
Hi Robin,
While I think it would have been great if the new PM helped raise concern for finding a cure for Diabetes, I honestly think it is the kind of thing “up the alley” of a member of the Royal Family. Any of them suffer from it? Any of them in need of a good cause to help?
Thank YOU for stepping up to the plate to help others suffering from this horrible disease!
Cheers!
Thank you, Tom. I don’t know about the royals.
A lovely reply from the new PM to your thoughtful gift.
Bravo Robin as a diabetic 2 for 3 months standing but married to an insulin, dependent for the last 18 years, let us hope that Mrs May will take on broad how important it is to get the word out there and make it loud and clear. It so important to have the information to hand.
Absolutely Elaine–let’s hope!
