Last week, my tum was upset–I won’t go into detail!
We diabetics, need to eat regularly, but I wasn’t fancying much–so what exactly?
Rice says Meredith–bland and filling–less of a challenge to the digestion.
I like our rice–brown basmati–but not hugely, if I can put it like that.
Dragging myself to the health food shop I spotted some good looking broccoli–late season but fresh and green.
Lightly seasoned rice with added flecks of chopped parsley or coriander topped with steaming broccoli and a swirl of olive oil?
Little effort and easy on the stomach.
I had seconds!
Missed the pics! You must have felt badly! Hope you’re better. Rice is always a comfort food for my tum, but recently I had forgotten that, so thanks for the reminder. Grace Lankin
Worth remembering.
Glad you’re feeling better!!
Along with helping an upset tum, it helps keep you slim and trim…I have heard brown rice and vegetables are good for that! I like brown rice with cauliflower too…! All organic of course.
Poor you robin, I hope you feel better!!
I do, thank you, Carol.
Must remember that, Robin.
Any kind of rice (or grains) makes my blood sugar go sky high.
Better avoid them, Ellen. Sweet potato might be an alternative.
Funny you had broccoli – I did a broc and courgette/zucchini thing last night: good pasta, loads of grated parmesan and a bit of cream (optional), broc steamed then tossed in garlic and chilli flakes (a few), courgette ribboned with mandolin and char-grilled, all thrown together. Surprisingly tasty! And I’m no veggie!
Sorry Poldark’s come to a close. But more to come… with you?
Love, M and V.

Hope you are feeling better Robin, take care.Have you still got your spiky little lodger?
We aren’t sure, Elaine. A HH, not looking too stable, unsteadily passed through yesterday. we hope it is surviving in the woodpile.
For me when my stomach is acting up I usually eat plain wheat bread. I try to eat things that won’t spike my sugar. I do hope you are feeling better.
My older brother just got diagnosed with Diabetes 2 and I am purchasing your cookbook to help him along. He is not handling the diagnoses well and I’m trying to help him adjust to the changes in eating as he is a high calorie/fat/carb eater. I don’t want to overwhelm him with changes so I’m taking small steps with him.
I had a Poldark marathon this weekend and it was a nice way to spend the time. Tonight I will start Poldark 2. 🙂
Thanks, Cecilia. Well done with your caring for your brother. It is not the end of good eating!
I have never thought of rice as a good way to soothe an upset I will have to try that. It sounds delicious. so perhaps I wont wait for a dodgy tum! Thank you Robin.
I like plain boiled rice or risotto done with some chopped cooked chicken garden peas , a chicken stock cube and grated cheese on the top Plain and simple . If you cant have cheese i like also it with sultanas and or pine nuts
Will do and will show you the book when you get home. XX
Robin, I hope you are feeling much better now. Could it be the “season change”? I have been afflicted almost all April with stomach / tum issues…and now craving for food and wine to recover weight!!!! It usually occurs to me in Spring and Autumn (March-April/September). If I can give you any suggestion, try to avoid spices when you feel like this (especially pepper). Meredith is right: rice with olive oil and some parmesan is good. Forza e coraggio, Captain Cook!
Thanks Paola–feeling better. You may be right about the seasonal effects.
Upset stomach. Lemon juice in drinks of water helps. Mr. Ellis, this has nothing to do with Poldark but have you and your wife ever seen a film called “Babette’s Feast”? It stars Stephane Audran and is based on a story by Karen Blixen. It’s funny.
The Danish villagers have a diet of bread, beer and fish . Then a French lady comes along and cooks them a fine dinner using turtle soup, quails, fruit and cheeses they’ve never seen before when she wins a lottery ticket….
Lovely film, Heidi.
Hope you are well Robin. I have some health issues so not too good right now. Eating the correct food substance is proving hard not to cause very distressing problems. Will try your rice. Wishing you & Meredith all the very best. Diane

I am quite fond of the black (Forbidden!) and Red Bhutan rices, and quinoa, which I think may have a lower GI. When my father’s tum was unsteady, it was milk-toast for him; for me it’s “cream of wheat/farine”, and for my husband and son, boxed macaroni and cheese.
Pad thai is very comforting for me, too, as is miso soup or Chinese garlic eggplant. After a bout with collywobbles in the mid-80s, I ate miso, salad, & sushi. I very seldom have (deep) fried food any more, as it was the reason my tum was upset that time. Fish seems to be my one exception: I never liked fried chicken.
